"Gansai" refers to paints made by mixing pigments with gelatinous glue or starch, then putting them in a container and letting them dry. They are similar to solid transparent watercolors and are not that different in feel to use, but depending on the color, they may feel more opaque overall. Many of the colors are also subdued, and they are mainly used as art materials for Japanese painting.
